Cities and Biodiversity Outlook - A preview of the world's first city biodiversity and ecosystems assessment

18 June 2012, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - 14:30-15:30, ICLEI's Global Town Hall

By 2050, an additional 3 billion people will inhabit cities and urban land expansion will cover an area the size of Mongolia. How will the most rapid period of urbanization in all of human history effect biodiversity and the ecosystem services upon which the world’s people depend? What can be done, particularly by local city governments, to address these issues and follow a path of sustainable development?

These urgent questions are explored in the Cities and Biodiversity Outlook (CBO), the world’s first global assessment of the links between urbanization, biodiversity and ecosystem services. This session will provide an introduction to the CBO and a special advance preview of messages from the full report, to be released at CBD COP 11 in Hyderabad, India, in October 2012. The session will provide an opportunity to meet key people involved in the production of the CBO, including the CBD Executive Secretary, the CBO Main Editor, and authors of the assessment. Executive Director of ICLEI South Asia, regional and city government representatives will also speak about the applications of the CBO in local governments. A panel discussion and questions from the audience will follow the presentation.

Check the media package of CBO materials below and find out interesting facts about the assessment and its pre-launch at Rio+20!
