Mediterranean Regional Workshop for Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans: Coordinating Local and National Action in the Mediterranean Basin, Montpellier, France, from 17 to 19 January 2012
This regional capacity-building workshop for the regional and local coordination of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) for Mediterranean Countries will be held in Montpellier, France, from 17 to 19 January 2012. The workshop is organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), the City of Montpellier and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. This workshop is part of a series of regional and sub-regional capacity-building workshops being organized in 2011 and 2012. The purpose of the workshops is to strengthen national capacities for the development, implementation, review, updating and communication of NBSAPs; to help facilitate national implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020; and to generate national targets and commitments (Decision X/2, paragraph 17). The workshop will also provide an introduction to other COP-10 outcomes.
The workshop will consider the guidance of the
1975 Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) and its associated
Barcelona Convention for Protection against Pollution in the Mediterranean Sea, the various agreements under the
Regional Seas programme, as well as the
Mediterranean Blue Plan and regional chapters of other multilateral agreements such as the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

First Meeting of the Advisory Committee on Sub-National Governments, 7-9 March 2012, Parque do Barigui, Curitiba, Brazil
The main objective of this meeting is to constitute the Advisory Committee on Sub-National Governments and engage this level of government in CBD Local Authorities initiatives. Sub-national authorities will discuss about best practices on the conservation and the sustainable use of biodiversity and the implementation of the Plan of Action on Sub-National Governments, Cities and Other Local Authorities on Biodiversity 2011-2020. The roadmap of the Committee activities towards the 2nd City Summit in Hyderabad, India is also among the agenda items.
Third Meeting on the Implementation of the Plan of Action -Including a Meeting of the Advisory Committee of Cities and the Global Partnership on Local and Sub-National Action for Biodiversity, 21-23 March 2012, Nagoya, Japan
The objective of the meeting are : to provide an opportunity for Global Partnership participants to discuss and brainstorm potential program/contents and declaration of the second City Biodiversity Summit (to be held in parallel to COP11 in Hyderabad, India, in October 2012); to provide an opportunity for participants to discuss the roadmap towards COP11 and the second City Biodiversity Summit, and to share updates on other important cities and biodiversity topics; to discuss progress with the implementation of the Plan of Action and a response by cities - led by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. The meeting is co-organzied by the City of Nagoya, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) and ICLEI.
