- Title: Communicating Biodiversity with creativity and enthusiasm: The International Youth Forum Go4BioDiv
Organized by: Go4BioDiv (CBD, UNESCO, Tsukuba University, IUCN and GTZ)
Date and Time: Tuesday 26 October 13:15pm - 14:00pm
Venue: CEPA Fair, First Floor, Building 2 Room 216 A
The International Youth Forum Go4BioDiv, held in parallel to COP10, brings together young people from the most precious natural sites our planet has to offer. The participants come from more than twenty natural World Heritage sites in i.e. Mexico, Peru, Congo, Cameroon, Mauritania, Vietnam, China, India, Australia, Germany and the host country Japan. As representatives of the young generation, they have discussed issues of biodiversity conservation and climate change and will present their joint declaration. Having engaged with the topic in many creative ways like dance and art, they will provide the audience with new ideas on how to communicate biodiversity and also show some of their outstanding contributions like manga comics and video clips.
The importance of effective ABS CEPA has often been stated, inside and outside the core CBD arena. Now that ABS implementation is in sight, it becomes crucial to make multiple stakeholders understand what ABS is all about and how it affects their lives. Clear and well-targeted messages will always be needed to enable non-experts engage meaningfully in ABS debates. But one-way communication alone - like brochures, posters or films - will not be sufficient to arrive at workable ABS agreements at the local and national levels. What's needed are dialogue and negotiation, which in turn require a set of capacities on the side of all involved. The multi-donor "ABS Capacity Development Initiative for Africa" and the CBD Secretariat have jointly been working on ABS CEPA since 2008. They've developed a set of recommendations as well as some very practical approaches and tools, which will be presented and discussed at this Side Event. The feedback from the audience will be used to further develop workable ABS CEPA approaches for all regions of the world.
