- Title: Strategies for CEPA: The International University Network on Cultural and Biological Diversity
Organized by: University of Rome

In relation to the Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation (MoU) signed by the CBD Secretariat and the University of Rome "Sapienza". The side event will address (1) the gap of communication and knowledge between international institutions and universities, (2) the gap between Education and Capacity Building, (3) the very limited role universities play in disseminating and linking the CBD policy agenda and programmes of work to the local context to which they belong, (4) the innovative strategy that can allow universities to bridge the previous gaps and play a fundamental role as local social drivers opened to society, local/indigenous communities and experts, (5) the transdisciplinary scientific contribution universities can offer through the internalization of the CBD programmes of work in the academic system of studies.
- Title: Communicating Biodiversity: Bringing science to life

Biodiversity is the world’s most elaborate scientific concept, but also, potentially, its greatest story. Love of nature for most people is about awe, wonder and joy; not habitats, ecosystem services or extinction. By using these powerful emotions to bring science to life communicators will inspire conservation action around the world.
The IUCN Commission on Education and Communication (CEC) side event provides expert insight into the challenges communicators face, the common pitfalls of biodiversity communication, and the practical solutions that will inspire public and political action.

- Title: Exploring the power of films and photographs to influence hearts and minds

This inspiring multi-media presentation will illustrate how films and photographs, perhaps the most emotive and effective communications tools, really can play a valuable role in the battle to protect our planet’s imperilled habitats and species. Using exemplars of best practice from around the world, on both traditional and new media platforms, and from grass roots to international initiatives - you will see how images are making a significant impact in efforts to conserve biodiversity, and hear compelling arguments for putting imagery at the forefront of conservation communication strategies.
