The thematic consultation on the sustainable use of biological diversity for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework was scheduled to be held in Bern, from 30 March to 1 April 2020, in response to decision 14/34 and to a request made by the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework at its first meeting.

In light of the current coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has been taking measures, as necessary and in line with UN and local medical advice, to minimize risk to all participants, staff and the general population. As a result, the thematic Workshop on the Sustainable Use of Biological Diversity for the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework was cancelled (Notification 2020-029).

As an alternative to a face-to-face meeting, the thematic consultation on the sustainable use of biological diversity for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework will now be online, in order to ensure the consideration of further views on elements related to the sustainable use of biological diversity for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework (Notification 2020-051). The online activities that are planned for the consultation include a series of webinars, an online survey and an online moderated forum. All these activities will be undertaken under the supervision of the Co-Leads appointed by the Co-chairs of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. The following dates have been set for the survey, online forum and webinars:

First Webinar: 27 July 2020

Online Survey: 27 July – 18 August 2020

Online Forum: 07 – 11 September 2020

Second Webinar (in two time zones): 06 and 08 October 2020

Registration to participate in these activities is now closed. The deadline for registering was 23 July 2020.

The consultation will consider elements of the draft monitoring framework for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework developed for peer review in preparation for the twenty-fourth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific Technical and Technological Advice. A number of supporting documents have also been prepared to facilitate the discussions of the consultation.

The post-2020 global biodiversity framework aims to address all three objectives of the Convention. This consultation aims to provide further insight and strengthen those elements related to the sustainable use of biodiversity in the entire framework.

Through the various activities planned for this consultation, the aim is to provide the Co-Chairs of the Open-Ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and Parties at the third meeting of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework with concrete and constructive inputs on all the different elements of the draft framework that relate to the sustainable use of biodiversity.
