Number and Extent of Protected Areas

126 protected areas, with 2 Ramsar sites, 4 Biosphere Reserves and 2 pilot marine protected areas, covering a total of 2,541,675 ha and accounting for 7.6% of the total land area.

Percentage of Forest Cover

The total forest area is 12.3 million ha, with 10 million ha of natural forest and 2.2 million ha of plantations.

National Biodiversity Strategy Action Plan

Major features of National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan

The long-term objective is to protect the rich and unique biodiversity resources within the sustainable development framework of Vietnam. The immediate objectives include: protection of the country’s endemic ecosystems; endangered species; and promoting sustainable use of biodiversity. Vietnam has developed and is implementing a considerable number of strategies, policies and programmes that have covered a number of the 2010 targets. Initiatives in Access and Benefit Sharing

Vietnam has adopted important regulations that relate to access and benefit sharing, such as the Domestic Animal Varieties Ordinance (2004) and the Plant Varieties Ordinance (2004). Vietnam also organized a series of training workshops on access and benefit sharing.
