Status and Trends of Biodiversity

Overview

The islands of the Federated States of Micronesia are located in western Pacific Ocean. The reefs, which provide coastal protection and the source of livelihood for a majority of Micronesians, are home to nearly 1000 species of fish and more than 350 species of hard coral. The islands contain over 1000 plant species, at least 200 of which are endemic. The diversity of terrestrial plants and animals varies from east to west due to differences in climate, geology, topography and geographical isolation. Each of the four States is represented by its unique biodiversity. Kosrae State has magnificent swamp forests dominated by two endemic trees. Pohnpei has the most endemic species of the country and Yap has the most diverse mangroves and agroforests. Chuuk is high in endemics and also possesses the most endangered native forests in Micronesia.

Major features of National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan

The national vision described in the NBSAP consists of having more extensive, diverse, and higher quality of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems, which meet human needs and aspirations fairly, preserve and utilize traditional knowledge and practices, and fulfill the ecosystem functions necessary for all life on Earth. To this end, eleven strategic themes were developed: ecosystem management; species management; genetic resources use; agrobiodiversity; ecological sustainable industry development; biosafety; waste management; human resources and institutional development; resource owners; mainstreaming biodiversity; and financial resources. To each of the above themes is assigned a strategy goal, which, if pursued effectively, would steer the nation on a sustainable voyage towards the NBSAP vision.
