XII/13.Access and benefit-sharing

The Conference of the Parties,
Recalling that the third objective of the Convention is the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources, including by appropriate access to genetic resources and by appropriate transfer of relevant technologies, taking into account all rights over those resources and to technologies, and by appropriate funding,
Emphasizing that the provisions of the Convention related to access and benefit-sharing continue to apply to all Parties to the Convention,
1.Welcomes the entry into force of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization, which is a significant step towards meeting the third objective of the Convention;
2.Urges all Parties to the Convention that have not yet ratified the Nagoya Protocol to do so;
3.Recalls Article 26 of the Convention, which requires Parties to report on measures taken for the implementation of the provisions of the Convention, and also recalls that these reports should include information on measures taken in relation to the access and benefit-sharing and related provisions of the Convention, in particular in relation to Article 15 of the Convention;
4.Requests the Executive Secretary to prepare a note on possible ways and means to promote integrated approaches to issues at the interface between the access and benefit-sharing-related provisions of the Convention and the provisions of the Nagoya Protocol, taking into account the latest national reports under the Convention, available information in the Access and Benefit-sharing Clearing-House, and the interim national reports under the Nagoya Protocol, as well as other information submitted to the Executive Secretary, for consideration by the Conference of the Parties at its fourteenth meeting as well as the third meeting of the Conference of Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol;
