Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries

The Global Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries establishes principles and standards applicable to the conservation, management, and development of all fisheries. The Code provides a necessary framework for national and international efforts to ensure sustainable exploitation of aquatic living resources in harmony with the environment.

These Three International Plans of Action (IPOA) contain voluntary instruments focusing on capture fisheries, sharks, and sea birds.  These are:

1. The IPOA for reducing incidental catch of seabirds in longline fisheries.
2. The IPOA for the conservation and management of sharks.
3. The IPOA for the management of fishing capacity.

Confederation of European Paper Industries

CEPI is a Brussels-based non-profit making organisation regrouping the European pulp and paper industry and championing this industry’s achievements and the benefits of its products. Through its 19 member countries (17 European Union members plus Norway and Switzerland) CEPI represents some 760 pulp, paper, and board producing companies across Europe, ranging from small and medium sized companies to multi-nationals, and 1080 paper mills. Together they represent 26% of world production.

Connecting Communities to Make Markets: developing small-scale markets for FSC-certified community forest operations

This tool illustrates ways of improving the marketing of community forest products, with specific reference to FSC (Forest Stewardship Coucil) forestry certification. It also aims to improve buyers' understanding of the difficulties faced by communities in developing marketable products. The aim is to influence policies on the procurement of forest products. It was created based on a series of interviews with designers, architects, timber consumers in the State of Sao Paulo and with FSC-certified community producers in the State of Acre.

Conservation Grade

The Conservation Grade is a sustainability protocol implemented by farmers in return for a contracted premium price for their crop. They prescribe to the creation and maintenance of wildlife habitats, creation of a Farm Environment Plan, certain production requirements, and pesticide restrictions.

Conservation Principles for Coffee Production

These principles were developed in consultation with coffee growers, importers, roasters, retailers, and conservationists, and serve as a common framework for companies and farmers seeking to integrate biodiversity conservation and social standards into their business practices. Furthermore, they were developed with in collaboration with Conservation International, Rainforest Alliance, and the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Centre in 2001, and initiatives such as the Common Code for Coffee post date them.

CIRIA is an independent member-based not-for-profit association that delivers a programme of business improvement services and research activities for both members and those engaged with the delivery and operation of the built environment. It has developed tools and guidelines for different aspects of sustainable construction.

Corporate Biodiversity Management Handbook

This hand-book gives enterprises concrete implementation tools for instituting biodiversity management practices. At the same time it introduces methods and tested instruments through best-practice examples from the ‘Biodiversity in Good Company’ Initiative members.

Corporate Ecosystem Services Review (ESR)

Developed by WRI, in conjunction with WBCSD and the Meridian Institute, this tool enables companies to identify business risks and opportunities arising from company’s dependence and impact on ecosystem services. Can be applied at site, market, product or sector level and can feed into Environmental Impact Assessments. Can also help identify new markets/ products. Following this, an initiative has been developed to determine how ecosystem services can be integrated into existing tools and management systems.

Corporate Ecosystem Valuation

This first-of-its-kind framework enables companies to consider the actual benefits and value of the ecosystem services they depend upon and impact, giving them new information and insights to include in business planning and financial analysis. This will support improved business decision-making by creating more alignment between the financial, ecological, and societal objectives of companies.

The Guide was developed through an 18-month process of close collaboration with 4 partner organizations - ERM, IUCN, PwC and WRI, as well as fourteen WBCSD member Road Testers. The guide operationalizes TEEB at the company level.
