The MEB was created in September 2010 by the Ethos Institute, private companies, and NGOs with the purpose of promoting the mobilization and engagement of the business sector to assume voluntary actions and act directly for the construction of public politicies regarding the use of the Brazilian biodiversity. MEB undertakes activities regarding sustainable development through the promotion of the economic growth within better business practices, and seeks to contribute to the construction and improvement of the regulatory point of access for Brazilian biodiversity.

Rapid progress has recently been made, and the Catalogue of Life contained 1,347,224 species as of May 2012. This figure may represent slightly over 2/3rds of the world's known species.

The CSI is a global effort by 24 major cement producers with operations in more than 100 countries who believe there is a strong business case for the pursuit of sustainable development. Collectively these companies account for about one third of the world’s cement production and range in size from very large multinationals to smaller local producers.

The purpose of the Initiative is to:

  • Explore what sustainable development means for the cement industry.
  • Identify actions and facilitate steps cement companies can take, individually and as a group, to accelerate progress toward sustainable development.
  • Provide a framework for other cement companies to become involved.
  • Create the content and context for further stakeholder engagement.
