Advancing More, Better and Faster Financing for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services

Strategy for Resource Mobilization

Basis for action:
“The effective implementation of the strategy for resource mobilization will require an unremitting effort of all relevant stakeholders of the Convention at all levels. Political will and commitment to better recognize the importance of biological diversity in sustainable development must be reinforced in order to achieve the funding target” -- Strategy for resource mobilization, paragraph 11

Articles 20 and 21 of the Convention provides for architectural design of financial cooperation for biodiversity and ecosystem services. To implement Articles 20 and 21, the Conference of the Parties adopted a strategy for resource mobilization in support of the achievement of the Convention’s objectives in May 2008. The strategy set in motion the process of developing funding targets, indicators and concrete activities and initiatives, as well as implementation and monitoring arrangements.

The concept of a strategy for resource mobilization arose from the eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties in 2006. Three open and inclusive informal consultations were conducted in order to prepare a draft strategy for resource mobilization in the period lead to the ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties in 2008. The implementation of the strategy for resource mobilization will be reviewed by subsequent meetings of the Conference of the Parties.
