  Official Celebrations
To coincide with the theme for this year's IDB, the main function for the Day was celebrated on 22 May 2014 at Port Blair, the capital of one of India's two groups of islands, namely, Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The main activities of the event included: presentation of the UNDP / Government of India Biodiversity Awards 2014, for recognising excellence in community stewardship, decentralized governance, co-management, and protected areas.

Furthermore, several State Biodiversity Boards at the provincial level celebrated the Day by organising events such as painting and photography competitions for school children on that Day.

Official Launch of India Business & Biodiversity Initiative (IBBI), New Delhi
An event was organised in New Delhi on 22 May 2014 to formally launch the India Business and Biodiversity Initiative (IBBI). The business-led IBBI is hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) with support from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Government of India, and of the German International Cooperation (GIZ). The IBBI is now a member of the Global Partnership for Business and Biodiversity. The IBBI serves as a national platform for business and its stakeholders for dialogue, sharing and learning, ultimately leading to mainstreaming sustainable management of biological diversity into business.

The ten-point IBBI Declaration was presented at the event, highlighting the action areas where business can contribute to conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.

Update - Celebration of International Day for Biological Diversity 2014

We are pleased to inform about the following activities undertaken by the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE):

In order to create awareness about biodiversity, ICFRE celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity 2014 (IDB2014) across its seven Institutes and Centres with fervor, namely:

  1. lnstitute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding. Coimbatore
  2. Centre for Social Forestry and Eco-Rehabilitation, Allahabad
  3. Himalayan Forest Research Institute, Shimla
  4. Rain Forest Research Institute. Jorhat
  5. Institute of Forest Productivity, Ranchi
  6. Tropical Forest Research Institute. Jabalpur
  7. Arid Forest Research Institute, Jodhpur

Events included talks by eminent personalities on the subject, photo competition on the theme 'Forest biodiversity', awareness programmes on the theme 'Island and Biodiversity, quiz, painting, slogan writing and essay writing competitions on biodiversity related topics, plantation programmes, extempore speech competition and open sessions, debate for school children on 'Island Biodiversity', film shows, etc.

The central idea of organizing various events was to create awareness about biological diversity and to sensitize the officers working in relevant areas and school children about biodiversity status and trend and its conservation.

More than 800 people, including officers, scientists and students have actively participated in these events.

The Uttar Pradesh State Biodiversity Board celebrates the International Day for Biological Diversity.


  Andhra Pradesh State Biodiversity Board (APSBB)
The Andhra Pradesh State Biodiversity Board (APSBB) organised the celebrations of the ‘International Day for Biological Diversity-2014’ with the aim of spreading awareness on biodiversity and the importance of preserving it in villages and islands. The function was held at the Indira Priyadarshini Auditorium at Public Gardens on Thursday. Read more ->


  IDB2014 Celebrations at the Centre for Environment Education
CEE celebrated the IDB2014 by organising a number of activities. Among others, the Earthian Foundation of WIPRO and the Paryavaran Mitra of the Centre for Environment Education (CEE) have together launched Sustainability Education Initiative by engaging schools in a nationwide awareness campaign on Biodiversity. The campaign through tree planting and related creative activities such as slogan designing, photo album creations, story writing about any life that the students love, they will explore biodiversity around them. The idea is to inculcate a sense of appreciation among school students about biodiversity and to inspire and engage them in the protection of biodiversity for sustainability through activities. More than 2000 schools are expected to participate in this initiative across India.


  Gujarat Science City
The Gujarat Science City in association with Gujarat Biodiversity Board and Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST) is organizing a Workshop on Island Biodiversity at Science City on 22nd May 2014 to mark the celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity. Read more ->

  Tree planting activity in Punjab
The Government Middle School, phase-7mohali in Punjab celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity on the school campus. Students planted 5 plants of different species (banyan, neem, guava, gulmohar and ehakrasia), see the pictures. The school plans to also participate in the Green Wave.


  Eco Concept, Guwahati, Assam
With support from International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Kathmandu, Eco Concept celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May, through a series of activities with schools around Guwahati to bridge the gap between books and biodiversity.
