“The ASEAN Center for Biodiversity was recently established by the ten member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to promote biodiversity conservation in the region, which is well known for its diverse and rich tropical biological diversity. The Center reflects the strong commitment of ASEAN member countries to embark on concerted and coordinated operational activities to promote the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity. ASEAN has taken the lead in many areas, including establishing harmonized national and regional databases of biodiversity inventory, adoption of the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Access and Benefit Sharing, establishing a regional network of protected areas through the ASEAN Declaration on Heritage Parks etc. The side event will highlight the efforts of ASEAN member countries and the Center in particular, and on opportunities for collaboration and partnership for CBD implementation in one of the world’s most important bioregions.”
