Meeting
Tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10)

Over the past two years, The Nature Conservancy and UNDP have collaborated with 18 govts in the Latin America Region to better understand the existing and needed levels of financing for protected area systems to meet the targets of the CBD Programme of Work on Protected Areas. Coupled with economic valuation of the services provided by protected area systems and their role in buffering communities from climate change impacts , these results have been used to better motivate for increased budgets and capacity. They have also been a platform to explore alternative sustainable funding mechanisms, including the use of water funds, capital trusts, tourism levies, climate revenues and offsets for mitigation of development in situations around the world. In this side event, the major findings of the report, and examples of innovative financing mechanisms being applied in the LAR region and beyond will be presented. Many of these mechanisms underpin announcements being made at COP10.
