ProtectedPlanet.net is the newest initiative of UNEP-WCMC and IUCN to put digital information about national parks and protected areas at the fingertips of internet users globally. ProtectedPlanet builds upon the work achieved by the World Database on Protected Areas and adds new features focussing on species information from IUCN’s RedList™ of Threatened Species, GBIF Biodiversity data, Wikipedia™, Panoramio™ and Flickr™ photos and Google Maps™. Harnessing the power of Web 2.0 social networking platforms like Facebook and Twitter, ProtectedPlanet will engage the general public like never before and bring protected areas to a whole new generation of motivated stewards, managers, policy makers and researchers. The tool is specifically aimed at supporting the monitoring of progress in the implementation of the CBD Programme of Work on Protected Areas as called for by COP decision IX/18. We will show in this side event how ProtectedPlanet.net is set to revolutionise global conservation information collection, reporting and promotion. We will demonstrate its value in linking primary science working with Oxford University to policy within the CBD and its LifeWeb project. This side event will launch protectedplanet.net and the United Nations List of Protected Areas 2012, responding to the mandate provided by COP decision IX/18.
