Organizer
Bioversity International
Date and Time
13 May 2010 13:15 - 14:45
This side event will highlight how communities in Kenya are using local agricultural biodiversity to improve nutrition and health and sustain livelihoods. Similar examples demonstrating the importance of local agricultural biodiversity to improve nutrition and wellbeing from other local and indigenous communities will be highlighted including Brazil, Sri Lanka and Turkey. The side event will provide an opportunity to demonstrate how such examples can help support initiatives to strengthen the conservation and sustainable management of agricultural biodiversity through mainstreaming into national and global nutrition, food and livelihood security strategies and programmes. The work of the Cross Cutting Initiative on Biodiversity for Food and Nutrition, which Bioversity International and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are helping to implementing through its work programme and tasks, will be highlighted including the work these four countries are leading. The event will provide an opportunity for interactions between farmers, community leaders, scientists and policy makers.
