Meeting
Tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10)

Concepts of well being are defined differently in different worldviews, although they eventually aim to reach a level of welfare. Building on research and practices undertaken by the different partners, the side event will focus on the development and roles of bio-enterprises through endogenous processes in achieving human well-being at a community level. It would critically analyse the roles of different ‘needs’- material, security, belonging, self-esteem and spiritual –in incentivizing actions and strategies to attain a desired state of well-being. This builds on previous research and work of the partners that suggest that effective sharing of benefits from localized sustainable bioprospecting activities contributes to development and their analysis provides valuable lessons for policy makers to design institutional and implementation policy protocols relevant to ABS and various payments for ecosystem services.
