Tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10)

Indigenous Peoples and their territories are endowed with a wealth of natural and cultural resources. The unique environment, the diversified local culture and the traditional lifestyles represent opportunities and challenges for the sustainable economic activities in those regions. Indigenous and local communities are increasingly using tourism as the driver to promote sustainable development, in order to preserve their ecosystems, natural resources, and their traditional knowledge. Along with a series of workshops promoted by SCBD on this theme, the award for Best Indigenous Tourism Web Site and Biodiversity (ITBW) was launched to motivate those communities to better promote their destinations, by highlighting their best practices in managing tourism and raising operators and visitors awareness on biodiversity protection.
