The rate of increase in the number of protected areas (PAs) in China has been accelerating in in recent years. Despite the increasing number of PAs, the capacity of staff to effectively monitoring and assess biodiversity has failed to keep pace. The Wildlife Institute at Beijing Forestry University and the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit at the University of Oxford are undertaking a capacity building programme for China's PAs, in collaboration with the Chinese government's State Forestry Administration and the UK government's Darwin Initiative. Here we present our approach and offer discussion for improvement and enhancements within China and more widely.
