Date and Time
9 November 2011 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Fifteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice

The side event will present key findings of the protected area analyses underpinning the Protected Planet Report 2012 and discuss how protected areas are key to meeting the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. The report, the first in a new series of regular reports prepared by UNEP-WCMC and a wide range of partners, seeks to communicate key facts about the status and trends in the global protection of biodiversity and ecosystem services to decision makers. The report will underline the importance of investing in protected areas for ensuring that natural assets continue to provide the environmental resources and services on which human well-being relies on. Building on the work of the CBD-mandated Biodiversity Indicators Partnership, the report will include a set of indicators of protected area coverage, governance, management, financing and biodiversity outcomes. At the side event we will present the current status and trends in these indicators and, through an interactive discussion with the side event participants, discuss options for how to accelerate progress and achieve the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. The side event will also explore the most effective ways to reach policy makers with the information that has been generated. Following a pending review process, the Protected Planet Report 2012 will be launched at SBSTTA 16 and provide valuable input to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (4-6 June 2012), the IUCN World Conservation Congress to be held in Jeju, Republic of South Korea (6-15 September 2012) and the 11th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity to be held in Hyderabad, India (8-19 October 2012).
