Meeting
Fifteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice

Forest-related knowledge and practices have supported the livelihoods and cultures of local and indigenous communities for centuries, while sustaining and enhancing biological diversity in forests and associated agro-ecosystems. In 2005, the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) created a Task Force on Traditional Forest Knowledge that has aimed to increase understanding within the scientific and policy communities of: (a) the scope and role of TFRK in traditional societies throughout the world; (b) its history and current status; (c) relationships between traditional and formal (scientific) forest-related knowledge; and (d) potential for TFRK to complement current approaches to forest ecosystem management. A state-of-knowledge report by the IUFRO Task Force, entitled "Traditional Forest Knowledge: Sustaining Communities, Ecosystems & Biocultural Diversity" examines theses topics in a series of regional chapters and with reference to key issues including globalization, climate change, and ethics in scientific research. The main findings of the report will be presented and discussed during this side event.
