Date and Time
1 October 2012 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Sixth meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

The growing populations in most developing countries are creating high demands for more nutritious food, and industrial raw materials. In most cases, the additional food needs to come from increasing productivity levels with only moderate external inputs rather than by increasing area under cultivation. Further, the conservation of natural resources such as water for agriculture and urban use, and our preparedness to meet unexpected global changes causing new biotic or abiotic stresses can immensely benefit if we applied judiciously tools of modern biotechnology for improvement of local crops. This proposed side-event will bring to the fore the opportunities biotechnology can offer to enhance agricultural productivity on a sustainable basis along with conservation of environment; such an approach can even minimize the much-feared consequences of global climate change. A pragmatic policy to promote such initiatives is the need of the hour.
