Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)

Protected areas serve many purposes but, at their core, they must protect biodiversity. The global community has set aside 13% of lands and 1% of seas in protected areas and the Aichi targets commit to increasing that significantly by 2020. There is a growing literature that indicates protected areas do not always work well to conserve biodiversity. When do they work and why? What are the best areas to protect to conserve biodiversity? This workshop will explore evidence on what determines the ability of protected areas to conserve biodiversity. It will also approached to determining the key areas to protect for biodiversity conservation. The WCPA-SSC Joint Task Force on Biodiversity and Protected Areas has been working on 2 key questions: 1. What are the factors that make protected areas successful in protected area successful in conserving biodiversity? 2. What are the global standards for the identification key biodiversity areas> Both of these questions are ciritical for conservation and for implementing the Aichi targets. The workshop will feature a presentation oin each question, reporting on work form the Task force. Following the presentation, there will be an open discussion workshops focussed on how countries, regions and institutions might incorporate these ideas. Ideas from the workshop will be uses to further the work of the Task force as it moves to complete its work.
