Date and Time
18 October 2012 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)

The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety will showcase innovative activities for integrating business in successfully implementing the goals of the Strategic Plan and Germany’s National Strategy on Biological Diversity. Theyare a contribution to CoP 10 decision X/21 on business engagement and build on Germany’s strong commitment in that field since CoP 9 in Bonn. The event will present key activities with a two-fold focus: Against the background of the target year 2020 of the Strategic Plan and the opportunities of the UN Decade on Biological Diversity, German Government is increasing its efforts to set up a robust, structured dialogue with business in order to mobilize companies’ commitment even beyond Germany’s advanced regulation in the field of nature conservation. Thus, the Ministry is currently implementing a new dynamic platform for action and dialogue – a joint approach of business, government and nature conservation stakeholders to boost exchange and cooperation. In early 2012, a small steering group was called into life to prepare first steps. In the course of the year, further stakeholders have been involved to finalize the concept and program. The project is meant to be an open network, with partners inter alia: - the huge business federations like the German Federation of German Industry or the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce – as interface to companies (large and SMEs) - organizations or platforms active in the field of business and biodiversity, such as the 'Biodiversity in Good Company’ Initiative, the European Business and Biodiversity Campaign, or econsense – Forum for Sustainable Development of German Business - NGOs active in the field of nature conservation - other federal ministries. The official high-level national launch is scheduled for February 2013 and will take place on the occasion of the National Forum on Biological Diversity. A communication infrastructure will be established (website, strategy meetings, small coordination office, workshops/events). The side event intends to make participants familiar with this tool, the process, the construction and goals of the platform and lessons learnt. Complementary to these efforts, German Government attaches great importance to involving business in the process and progress of TEEB Germany, the three year national TEEB project that has commenced in 2011 under the title “Natural Capital Germany – TEEB Germany”. The event will be used to inform about the set-up and progress of TEEB Germany, especially regarding TEEB for Business.
