Side Event

TEEB (The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity) national implementation

Organizer
The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity - United Nations Environment Programme

Date and Time
11 October 2012 18:15 - 19:45

Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)

The event will draw attention to examples of TEEB inspired studies around the world. The main objective of this session will be to highlight how biodiversity and ecosystem services are starting to be mainstreamed in higher levels of policy- and decision- making, and how this mainstreaming is shaping future action at the national level. Several presentations will be given from a range of different stakeholders working at the national and sub-national level, providing updates as well as highlighting lessons learned and lessons to be learned from ongoing TEEB country studies/experiences. The TEEB implementation guides for the Aichi Biodiversity Targets will also be presented at the event. The session will likely consist of presentations from national representatives about the national study examples followed by a discussion and Q&A. Some questions that may stimulate the discussion could include: • What have been major barriers during implementation and how have these been overcome? What would be key suggestions to those countries wishing to undertake TEEB studies? • How can the international TEEB community help to facilitate/provide the support that is required for national implementation? • How can TEEB’s open architecture be ensured at the national level? • How can TEEB national studies be fully participatory and inclusive of all relevant national and local stakeholders? • What are the expected policy response plans (for those TEEB studies already well under way) for TEEB findings/national study results?
