Meeting
Sixth meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

The International Food Policy Research Institute Program for Biosafety Systems (IFPRI-PBS) proposes the following side event to the Sixth meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (MOP 6) as a discussion mechanism that will convene representatives from party and non-party countries, international organizations, socioeconomic experts, public and private sector scientists and/or decision makers to deliberate practical experiences with socioeconomic assessments and their relationship with biosafety decision making in order to delineate alternative policy and operational implementation options that will enable a way forward especially for those countries who have taken a decision to include socioeconomics in their decision making. The panelists’ discussion will include –but will not be limited to- overall experiences with socioeconomic assessments, alternatives for inclusion in decision making, country positions and/or experiences with decision making, potential implementation and process tradeoffs, impacts on innovation and the ability to supply public goods in developing countries and the needs for capacity building and/or strengthening including guidelines for implementation and other resources. We expect that one of the outcomes from this side event will be a document outlining the conclusions from this event and a summary document outlining implementation alternatives, positions and statements gathered from a distinct set of stakeholders which IFPRI-PBS is compiling for submission to the Parties and non-Parties.
