Operational Objective 1.7. of the Strategic Plan is “To, on the basis of research and information exchange, provide relevant guidance on socio-economic considerations that may be taken into account in reaching decisions on the import of living modified organisms”. A Workshop on capacity-building for research and information exchange on socio-economic impacts of living modified organisms took place in New Delhi, India in November 2011. At the Workshop, the need for conceptual clarity on socio-economic considerations was raised as one of the next steps in order to implement operational objective 1.7. of the Strategic Plan. At the Side-Event, reference will be made to the Online discussion forums and the discussions at the Workshop in New Delhi regarding conceptualization of socio-economic aspects in context of the Protocol’s Article 26. Parties to the Protocol will elaborate on activities on conceptualizing socio-economic effects of LMO’s.
