Date and Time

Meeting
Seventeenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice

This side event will present tools that can be helpful to countries to effectively implement Aichi Targets 11 and 12, by showing country focused case studies and lessons learned from identification of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) and management. It will also provide an update on IUCN´s progress towards developing a globally agreed framework and criteria for identifying KBAs that will be applicable to all components of biodiversity and across terrestrial, marine and freshwater biomes. Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) are sites of global significance for biodiversity identified by national constituencies and applying standardised criteria and thresholds; as such, they are a tool to guide the strategic expansion of the protected area network. Notable examples of KBAs include Important Bird Areas identified by BirdLife International (IBAs) and Alliance for Zero Extinction sites (AZEs) identified by the AZE Partnership. KBAs are also important to implement Target 12 as they are designed, among other things, to prevent species extinctions and sustain or improve threatened species populations if effectively managed.
