Meeting
Eighth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity

Free, Prior and Informed Consent is an important tool in implementing the Convention on Biological Diversity’s (CBD) program of work on the implementation of Article 8 (j) and related provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity. This side event will explore the different ways in which efforts to ensure FPIC support the CBD’s main objectives, especially work under Task 7 related to access to traditional knowledge and equitable sharing of benefits. The Secretariat will give an introduction to how FPIC is contributing to work under the Convention, and other partners will highlight how they are using FPIC in their projects related to traditional knowledge. Conservation International (CI) considers the right to FPIC and FPIC’s supporting principles to be the cornerstone of its work with indigenous and local communities, and will share its newly launched institutional guidelines for respecting FPIC. Other panelists will share their experiences at the regional and national levels.
