Eighteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice

As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change nears the end of its mammoth fifth assesment cycle, the London Convention grounds its ocean fertilization moratorium on a legal basis, and a spate of new modelling studies point up serious problems, especially with ocean fertilization and Solar Radiation Management proposals, it is becoming ever clearer that the 2010 CBD moratorium on geoengineering was a wise and farsighted decision. Nonetheless proposals for real world tests continue to be aggressively pushed and some Carbon Dioxide Removal geoengineering schemes such as BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage) are also receiving increasing government and commercial backing despite serious ecological and economic drawbacks. Come hear an update on the state of geoengineering governance and the new evidence on why extreme precaution remains the right path. With ETC Group and Biofuelwatch
