Side Event

Joint Report from South Korea and Japan Regarding GMO Contamination: Serious Threats to Our Local Biodiversity

Organizer
Japan Citizens' Network for Sustainable Food and Agriculture

Date and Time
30 September 2014 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Seventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

This side event will explore our efforts to deal with GMO contamination in our respective countries. We will expose evidence of imported canola that is resistant to Roundup Ready and Basta, growing wild near harbors and along roads to food oil factories. Unless import of GMOs is stopped, testing and destruction of wild growing GMO corn and canola must be stepped up, to avoid genetic contamination of local food crops. Civil society organizations in South Korea and Japan are calling for strong measures against this threat to the food safety and food security of our countries, and the world. This contamination can apply to rice or eggplant or any other crop as well. Please join our side event to learn more about the serious contamination of our biodiversity, and how you can avoid this happening in your own country.
