Biodiversity mainstreaming – what does success look like?

Organizer
BirdLife International and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

Date and Time
14 October 2014 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity

Mainstreaming biodiversity means different things to different people but it is recognized to be one of the key processes to address the underlying causes of biodiversity loss (Aichi Target 2). Nevertheless, it is not an easy task. Incorporating the values of biodiversity into development and economic sectors policies and practices is still a challenge. However, various initiatives have demonstrated that mainstreaming can contribute to the delivery of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. One of such initiatives is being carried out by IUCN and BirdLife International with seed funding from the French Government and aims at documenting successful mainstreaming cases through a series of simple fact sheets to inspire further mainstreaming efforts. This side event will share those success stories and present some of the factsheets being prepared. Through discussion of different experiences, participants will be presented with an array of approaches and challenges as well as creative and inspiring ways and means to overcome them.
