Meeting
Twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity

DIVERSITAS, the international programme of biodiversity science, was launch in 1991 with the goal to develop an international, non-governmental umbrella programme for research projects to address the complex scientific questions posed by the loss of and change in global biodiversity. Over the years, DIVERSITAS evolved towards a more integrative and inter-disciplinary, and a more social and policy relevant programme with the mission to provide the sound scientific base for decision making to secure the planet’s variety of life, while contributing to human well-being and poverty eradication. As part of its activities DIVERSITAS forged a very strong partnership with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). DIVERSITAS is entering its 3rd phase by joining with partners' programmes the Future Earth initiative for global sustainability. Future Earth is a global research platform designed to provide the knowledge needed to support society’s transformation to a sustainable world. Future Earth is building and connecting global knowledge to increase the impact of research and to find new ways to accelerate transitions to sustainable development. The DIVERSITAS community, as part of Future Earth, will continue its work with partners in institutions such as the CBD to co-develop the knowledge needed to support decision makers and societal change by focusing on three Research Themes – Dynamic planet, Global sustainable development and Transformations towards sustainability. This side event will present the Future Earth vision for 2025, and how it responds to scientific needs identified by the CBD, especially for the implementation of its Strategic Plan 2010-2020.
