Purpose and scope of the electronic discussion

Many experts, including inter alia experts in human, domestic animal, and wildlife health; conservation biology; law; and public policy have been invited to participate in the brainstorming meeting in Curitiba. However, not all interested experts will be able to travel and participate in the meeting. This electronic discussion has been organised to draw information and suggestions from a wide community on the following three main themes:

1.Geographic and ecological distribution of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus and the disease it causes, including methods and routes of spread/transmission with focus on impact on mammals;

2. Measures/initiatives for the surveillance, control and prevention of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus at the global, regional and national levels, and their known or potential short and long-term impacts on biodiversity goods and services

3.Recommendations to Governments attending the eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity to protect biodiversity from the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus, to the benefit of all life on Earth.

Under each theme, the questions for discussions are listed followed by some background information from the literature. Although everyone is encouraged to respond to all the questions, contributors can select only the questions they want to answer. However, everyone is encouraged to provide some recommendations that Governments should consider at the eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
