Convention on Migratory Species

As an environmental treaty under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme, CMS provides a global platform for the conservation and sustainable use of migratory animals and their habitats. CMS brings together the States through which migratory animals pass, the Range States, and lays the legal foundation for internationally coordinated conservation measures throughout a migratory range. Work during the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity: Parties to CMS quickly welcomed the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 as a framework relevant to all biodiversity-related conventions. CMS work cuts across many Targets, with Target 12 being the most relevant. CMS will work to improve the conservation status of migratory species (in particular, of all known threatened migratory species), the resilience of their habitats and their ecological connectivity. CMS has a programme of work to achieve this, which includes such things as: • Encouraging strict protection of migrator
