UNPFII Side Event: Practical tools for engagement with the Convention -- 29 April

The side-event is titled, "Biodiversity and indigenous peoples: Practical tools for engagement with the Convention on Biological Diversity" and will take place on 29 April 2021 at 07:30 (EDT) Montreal time.

Around the world, indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) make essential contributions to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) recognizes these important contributions of traditional knowledge (Article 8j), customary sustainable use (Article 10c), exchange of information including its repatriation (Article 17), and technical and scientific cooperation, including indigenous and traditional technologies (Article 18.4). Furthermore, there is a growing interest of IPLCs to better utilize the standards and tools under the Convention to protect their sustainable practices.

The side event aims to launch one training manual for IPLCs and government representatives on the Convention on Biological Diversity and its work on traditional knowledge. The manual provides useful guidance on how IPLCs can engage in CBD processes internationally and nationally. The CBD has developed specific tools, voluntary guidelines and plans to support the integration of views, perspectives and interests of IPLCs. These tools guide the implementation of Article 8(j) and related provisions. This training manuals aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the scope of the Convention and its Protocols, introducing the different tools, guidelines and plans of particular relevance for IPLCs.

The side event also serves as an informal channel to update the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) members and participants on the current status of the development of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.
