The UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD, 2005-2014) engages people through innovative ways of learning about biodiversity by focusing on education and training to address the interlinking issues of biodiversity, ecosystems and livelihoods, the interactions of nature with culture, society and economy, and the actions we can take without affecting our quality of life.
In a course of the side event, representatives of UN agencies (members of the Inter-Agency Committee (IAC)¹ for the UN DESD), governments and the Regional Centres of Expertise (RCE)² on Education for Sustainable Development will share their experiences on strategies and actions in learning for enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem services. The event will be conducted in a form of a panel discussion.
¹ IAC is a forum of 17 UN agencies established by UNESCO as a forum of UN agencies for open-ended collaboration towards the effective implementation of the Decade.
² RCE is a network of formal, informal and nonformal education and learning-related organisations who are mobilised to deliver ESD at regional (sub-national) and local level. As of September 2010, 77 RCEs are officially acknowledged by UNU in the world.

  • Title: Biodiversity Barometer 2010: Biodiversity, Consumers and the Business Response
Organized by: Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) - Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD)
Date and Time: Monday 25 October at 18:15pm – 19:45pm
Venue: CEPA Fair, First Floor, Building 2 Room 216 A

Increasing the understanding of biodiversity and its vital role in sustaining life on Earth is central to safeguarding this natural wealth. The Biodiversity Barometer 2010 shows the rising awareness of biodiversity, with 60% of consumers in Europe and the United States having heard of biodiversity. More importantly, 81% of consumers are ready to stop buying products from companies who disregard ethical biodiversity sourcing practices.

2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity and a range of efforts is underway to put the spotlight on biodiversity. But how can biodiversity be brought into peoples’ homes? How will it make its way into industry boardrooms? What are the insights stemming ongoing communication efforts? How are companies already responding to and engaging in the rising awareness of biodiversity?

A panel of experts will be looking at these and other questions in the interface between biodiversity, consumers and business. The event will also feature the presentation of the results for the consumer surveys of Japan and Korea, recently added to the UEBT Biodiversity Barometer 2010.
