Coral reefs are at the front-line of climate change. The latest IPCC report warns that without bold, decisive action over the next decade we will lose 70 to 90 percent of corals, even if global warming is limited to 1.5 degrees. We invite ministers and head of delegation of CBD Parties to become champions for coral reefs: what we do over the next decade will determine the fate of these reefs, and the hundreds of millions of people who rely on them for food, income, and coastal protection. The world needs to mobilize innovative partnerships and transformative actions and develop a global plan of action, with ambitious but achievable targets/milestones in line with 2050 long-term vision for biodiversity, to prevent the widespread extinction of coral reefs.

We are proud to announce the launch of an unprecedented collaboration to respond to the coral reef crisis in this International Year of the Reef.

Together, we will aim to rapidly raise awareness of the crisis and create public support for setting ambitious, achievable targets/milestones in Beijing in 2020.
