Food Day

28 October 2024

Context

Biodiversity is the foundation of food security and nutrition. This includes the genetic diversity in the crop varieties and livestock breeds that are the basis of people’s diets, the wild species that contribute to the supply of food and materials, and the ecosystems whose functions and services support production.

Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) have recognized these interlinkages since the ratification of the Convention. However, further actions to support the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity are needed given that biodiversity continues to decline faster than at any time in human history, threatening global efforts to achieve food security.

During the 2022 UN Biodiversity Conference, the need to foster more sustainable agrifood systems was reflected in the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), which includes direct links to food and agriculture (agrifood) systems in most of its goals and targets. Successful implementation of the KMGBF will require the active involvement of the crop, livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture sectors in the transformation of agrifood systems.

This period in which countries are developing new national targets, updating their national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) and focusing on the implementation of the KMGBF is an opportune moment to address the need to strengthen collaboration.

Food Day will aim to provide meaningful support to countries in their efforts to realize the COP 16 theme: “Peace with Nature”. This will require engagement with agrifood systems and their actors. Food security and biodiversity considerations need to go hand in hand.
