CBD RELEASES TWO REPORTS ON FOREST BIODIVERSITY AND CLIMATE CHANGE

New AHTEG Report on 'Connecting Biodiversity and Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation'

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released the report of the Second Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group on Biodiversity and Climate Change (AHTEG). The main messages conveyed by AHTEG in this report focus on:
The impacts of climate change on biodiversity
The role of biodiversity in climate change adaptation
The links between biodiversity conservation and sustainable use and climate-change mitigation, including REDD
The ways and means to value biodiversity with regard to climate-change responses.

The outcome of scientific and technical deliberations conducted by experts from 23 countries as well as United Nations organizations, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and representatives from indigenous communities, the report provides biodiversity-relevant information to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The publication is available for download at: http://www.cbd.int/doc/publications/cbd-ts-41-en.pdf.

The CBD Secretariat cordially invites you to a side event during the UNFCCC COP 15 in Copenhagen, where the key messages of the report will be presented, as well as to a Learning Event on "Forest Biodiversity and Climate Change" as part of Forest Day 3, on 13 December in the Radisson Falconer Hotel (please see http://www.cifor.cgiar.org/Events/ForestDay3/Introduction/ ).

New Synthesis Report on 'Forest Resilience, Biodiversity, and Climate Change'

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has launched a synthesis report on the biodiversity/resilience/stability relationship in forest ecosystems. The report strongly supports the conclusion that the capacity of forests to resist change, or recover following disturbance, is dependent on biodiversity at multiple scales. The findings are relevant for the further implementation of the CBD programme of work on forest biodiversity, as well as for efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD), as the resilience and stability of forest ecosystems are linked to the permanence of carbon stocks.

The publication is available for download at http://www.cbd.int/doc/publications/cbd-ts-43-en.pdf Hard copies can be ordered free of charge from secretariat@cbd.int. The publication was developed by request of the ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP).

The CBD Secretariat is cordially invites you to a side event during the World Forestry Congress in Buenos Aires, where the results of the report will be presented (22 October, 12:45 – 14:15, Yellow Pavilion, Guatambú Room).
