  • Creating Impact for One Health and EcoHealth; advancements in implementation, evaluation and governance

The CBD Secretariat contributed to a Conference on “Creating Impact for One Health and EcoHealth; advancements in implementation, evaluation and governance”, which was jointly convened by the Community of Practice Biodiversity and Health (COPBH), the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences (DISTAL) of the University of Bologna, and the Network for Evaluation of One Health. The event, held in Bologna, Italy, in September 2018 aimed to explore how EcoHealth and One Health approaches are being evaluated and implemented in practice; learning about changes in institutional and regulatory structures at national and international levels; and discussing how the process of translating science into practice can be promoted. Keynote speakers, oral and poster presentations, roundtables alongside parallel discussion sessions with participants from all around the world were used to explore the evaluation of One Health and Ecohealth initiatives in relation to the policy cycle, knowledge integration and governance of One Health and EcoHealth; examples of One Health implementation in different regions of the world level including needs barriers and success factors; and collaboration between science and practice. The conference showed that there is great enthusiasm for closer collaboration between Ecohealth and One Health and that there is a strong desire to elaborate approaches that can help to make a difference with complex health challenges. It was observed that there is a lot of great science, but that this science needs to be supported by appropriate government action and policy. A new book on Integrated Approaches to Health was also launched at the Conference and is freely available for download here. The conference also paved the way for NEOH2, the European Chapter of Ecohealth International that will continue to promote health for people, animals and the environment.
