UN Biodiversity Convention announces slogan for the 2022 International Day for Biological Diversity

UN Biodiversity Convention’s two subsidiary bodies holding virtual meetings over May and June.

World celebrates nature as a source of solutions to global challenges.

The Convention on Biological Diversity is pleased to partner with the Slow Food International for this year’s celebrations of the International Day for Biological Diversity, on 22 May 2019, which focuses on biodiversity as the foundation of our health and food systems.

The United Nations celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity by examining the fundamental role of nature in ensuring human health and good nutrition.

Opening with a traditional greeting from Charles Patton, a respected elder in the Mohawk Community of Kahnawa:ke, the 25th anniversary of the entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was celebrated yesterday in Montreal at an event gathering together senior officials from the Government of Canada, the province of Quebec, the City of Montreal, representatives of the diplomatic corps and dignitaries from around the world.

The rich variety of life on Earth is essential for the welfare and prosperity of people today and for generations to come.

In today’s global celebrations of the International Day for Biological Diversity, under the theme of ‘Biodiversity and Sustainable Tourism’, people are examining the positive but also potentially negative impacts that tourism can have on biodiversity.

On this International Day for Biological Diversity, let us recommit to global action to reduce the rate of biodiversity loss, for people and for our planet.

Islands are taking action to effectively conserve biodiversity and promote sustainable livelihoods. Despite significant vulnerabilities facing islands, leaders of island countries and countries with islands have made visionary commitments at local, national, regional and global levels.

On the International Day for Biological Diversity, celebrated under the theme of Island Biodiversity, islands are taking action to effectively conserve biodiversity and promote sustainable livelihoods. These actions, or “Bright Spots,” point the way towards sustainable development for island ecosystems and beyond.

Islands and their surrounding near-shore marine areas constitute unique irreplaceable ecosystems often comprising many plant and animal species that are found nowhere else on Earth. They are also key to the livelihood, economy, well-being and cultural identity of 600 million islanders—one-tenth of the world’s population.
