With recent commitments made by governments around the globe, the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is optimistic that the world is on track to protect over 10 percent of the globe’s marine areas by 2020. This was announced by Dr. Cristiana Pașca Palmer, executive secretary of the CBD, as agreed upon by parties to the CBD in 2010, and was also adopted by member-states of the UN as part of Sustainable Development Goal 14.
