Indira Gandhi was Durga. She split Pakistan. She split the Congress. She imposed the Emergency, strangled democracy, damaged Constitutional institutions. She was authoritarian. She was India’s Prime Minister from 1966-1977 and, again, from 1980-1984. She died a martyr, assassinated by her own bodyguards.
