In paragraph 2 of recommendation 1/1 of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Protected Areas which met in Montecatini, Italy, from 13 to 17 June 2005, the Executive Secretary was invited to compile a list of existing ecological criteria for identification of potential marine areas for protection and biogeographical classification systems based on submissions received from the Parties, other governments and organizations.
