Indigenous and local communities have important role to play in implementation of Biodiversity Convention: Ahmed Djoghlaf

Montreal – 10 January 2006. Stressing the role of traditional knowledge and the practices of indigenous and local communities in biodiversity conservation, Ahmed Djoghlaf, the Executive Secretary to the Convention on Biological Diversity, reiterated the importance of the participation of indigenous and local communities in the Convention process. <br><br> β€œThe Convention will not achieve its objectives without protecting and conserving, for the benefit of present and future generations, the traditional knowledge and the ancestral practices of indigenous and local communities. It is for this reason that a dedicated working group on this issue has been established since 2000.”
