Side Event

Implementing the PoW on Protected Areas: governance as the key for effective and equitable Protected Area systems

Organizer
IUCN Strategic Direction on Governance, Communities, Equity, and Livelihood Rights in Relation to Protected Areas

Date and Time
11 February 2008 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Second meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Protected Areas (WGPA 2)

The side event, organized by IUCN’s TILCEPA (a joint Theme of IUCN Commissions WCPA and CEESP) will review the concept and practice of governance of protected areas — one of the less understood and more useful entry points for a successful implementation of the CBD Programme of Work on Protected Areas. Through a variety of concrete examples from countries in the South and the North, this side event will show how more appropriate PA governance can help expand the coverage of protected areas, address gaps in the system, improve biological connectivity at landscape/seascape level, increase the flexibility and responsiveness of the system, enhance public support for conservation and, ultimately, improve overall PA sustainability and strengthen the ties between people and nature.
