Meeting
Ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 9)

Sustainable and responsible trade of biodiversity derived products and services, is an economic incentive that is contributing to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, as well as an equitable sharing of benefits. Furthermore, environmentally friendly market demand is driving producers and SME worldwide to focus on more sustainable schemes that comply with environmental, social and economic criteria. Methodologies and guidelines have been prepared in order to guide private actors in including BT P&C in their value-chain activities/business-related activities. In the spite of actions taken in this sense, access to markets by producers and SMEs of developing countries have been limited as a result of detrimental incentives and barriers that are fostering traditional products. UNCTAD BioTrade Initiative, during this side event, will present concrete examples that are leader by developing countries in overcoming these barriers, while share its activities planned under the BioTrade Facilitation Programme II for 2008 - 2011.
