Academic research is in various functions involved in access to genetic resources: basic research as e.g. taxonomic research which is essential for the conservation goal as well as research that might in some cases lead to the development of products. In particular for basic research rigorous ABS standards might be counterproductive, not only for the research itself, but also for the host countries which could benefit from the research results. The Swiss Academy of Science has created an international network of research institutions (GenEquiFair) that aims at finding solutions acceptable by both, provider and user countries. The Side-Event will present and discuss problems and possible solutions.
