Side Event

Access and Benefit Measures (ABS) and Capacity Assessment in Four African Sates (Botswana, Ghana, Uganda, Zambia).

Organizer
UNEP, Division of Environmental Law and Conventions AND United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies

Date and Time
23 May 2008 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 9)

Country studies were commissioned in 2004-2005 to find out what progress had been made in implementing ABS measures in Botswana, Ghana, Uganda, and Zambia. The side event presents the updated detailed country reports on the institutional and policy framework for ABS in each country and identifies the capacity gaps that hinder implementation of effective measures that reflect the principles in the Bonn Guidelines. A strategy for development and implementation of ABS frameworks is proposed for each country.
